ACUMEN & SYNCHROMODE joint final event

Multimodal Transport Management: From Research to Practice

Brussels, 21-22 April 2026

We are pleased to invite you to the joint final symposium of ACUMEN and SYNCHROMODE, taking place 21-22 April 2026 at COMET Louise in Brussels.

ACUMEN is joining forces with its sister project SYNCHROMODE, another Horizon Europe project advancing multimodal transport management solutions across Europe. This two-day event brings together the results, tools and lessons learned from both projects, offering practical insights for cities, transport operators and policymakers working to improve urban mobility.

The event is structured around interactive sessions featuring research findings, governance design, impact assessment and testimonials from pilot cities. Whether you are exploring AI integration, seeking to improve multimodal coordination or looking to build resilience into your transport network, this event will provide actionable insights and proven tools developed through real-world implementation.

Sessions will address critical questions that cities face when advancing their traffic management systems: How do you effectively handle heterogeneous mobility data sources? How do you create data-driven and AI-based traffic prediction and optimisation systems? How do you coordinate all modes of transport within existing frameworks, handle disruptions and build resilience? What governance structures are needed to integrate new tools into current operations, and how do you evaluate their effectiveness?

Both projects have developed practical tools designed to meet these challenges. The SYNCHROMODE Toolbox provides data-driven ICT tools for improving transport operations management from a multimodal perspective, including a transport network-wide data exchange system, a cooperative dashboard for real-time monitoring and a resilient multimodal transport network support tool. ACUMEN has developed a Digital Twin that integrates cities’ data to simulate transport operations through customisable traffic management scenarios, alongside an AI Decision Making Tool, an online self-assessment enabling cities to evaluate their readiness to integrate AI into traffic management operations with tailored advice on next steps.

The event will feature testimonials from seven pilot cities, each demonstrating different approaches to applying research results in real-world traffic management. Helsinki has been nudging users towards more environmentally friendly transport modes via a traffic-related app, whilst Luxembourg conducted an impact study of introducing automated vehicles into door-to-door journeys. Athens used traffic and transport simulations to provide short-term forecasts supporting optimal traffic management decisions, and Amsterdam developed multi-modal transport management simulations to ensure seamless travel during critical disruptions. The Province of South-Holland focused on traffic management for infrastructure works and seasonal tourist areas such as Keukenhof and the beaches, Madrid worked on integrating urban last-mile delivery with public transport services to create efficient multimodal trip chains, and Thessaloniki implemented the full SYNCHROMODE Toolbox across TEN-T main corridors, the peripheral ring road and the main urban road network.

This event is aimed at city transport planners, traffic management professionals, transport authority representatives, policymakers working on sustainable mobility, technology providers, innovators and transport and mobility researchers. It offers a valuable opportunity to learn from pioneering cities, explore effective solutions, and share knowledge with peers who are tackling similar issues across Europe.
