The Luxembourg pilot demonstrated the seamless on-demand mobility of automated vehicles in Contern, led by the University of Luxembourg .

The pilot focused on employees travelling to and from the local train station, with conventional and autonomous shuttles deployed to offer increased responsiveness and integration with public transport. The potential use of shuttles for goods delivery was also explored. Real-time traffic and transit information was used to optimise the on-demand service, building on a previous EU-funded project.

The impact of a large-scale on-demand shuttle service was assessed through simulation, modelling the area using macroscopic and microscopic approaches. The pilot demonstrated the technical readiness of automated vehicles for rescheduling operations and showcased the multi-use capabilities of the fleet for goods transport during periods of low passenger demand.

Scenarios covered performance improvement over time, real-time rescheduling, and integrated passenger and freight delivery functionality. User acceptance and wider societal considerations were assessed throughout, with collaboration between stakeholders actively encouraged.
